The Integrated Cellular Imaging (ICI) Core at Emory University is hiring a Core Director. The Core Director is a staff scientist who leads core operations, helps guide research strategy, manages a team of microscopists, and performs administrative tasks in support of the core facility. The ICI core has around 20 imaging technologies at 5 different sites on campus. The ICI Core Director will have extensive fluorescence imaging knowledge, including expertise in confocal imaging, live cell imaging, super-resolution imaging, and image analysis. Experience leading an imaging core facility as well as imaging technology development is strongly preferred. Managerial and grant writing experience is also preferred.
The ICI Core Director jointly reports to the Scientific Director, Executive Administrator of Research Administration (School of Medicine), Assistant Dean of Novel Technologies and Cores (School of Medicine), and Senior Director, Cancer Research Administration (Winship Cancer Institute).
Specific duties include:
Develop research strategy for the core in conjunction with the Scientific Director
Manage a team of microscopists within the core
Work with faculty to develop and implement projects
Mentors the Technical Director; provides annual performance review and goal setting.
Acquire new technologies for the core through grant writing and working with internal stakeholders
Reviews and approves SOP’s developed by Technical Director.
Participates in strategic planning related to the core operations, equipment, and services.
With the Scientific and Technical Director, leads the hiring of new core personnel.
Works with the Technical Director to develop educational and marketing initiatives
Oversees monthly billing in PPMS in coordination with the Technical Director.
Tracks core performance of projects using PPMS.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Associate Academic Research Scientist performs a wide range of highly technical and complex research duties and has documented scientific achievements and increasing technical, management, leadership, and professional expertise necessary to advance basic and/or translational research programs.
Demonstrated knowledge of research and experimental platforms for analyzing, design and interpreting results.
Investigates and recommends potential alternative approaches to improve the quality of results of basic and/or translational research.
Demonstrates increased responsibility through management of teams and leadership of scientific projects by applying advanced knowledge, skills, and input necessary for protocol development, as well as facilitating in some training aspects of other team members.
Aids in writing IACUC, IRB, Biosafety and other approval documents.
Oversees quality assurance of research conducted by other team members.
May assist in grant and other funding applications as necessary and appropriate, or with approval of the responsible faculty director, may have their own research projects and/or have full responsibilities for specific areas of instrumentation or methodology development and user support.
With the approval of the responsible faculty director, may be principal investigators on funded proposals.
Performs other responsibilities as required.
