While some of this text is dated (does anyone remember vidicon?), it remains an excellent textbook for learning the fundamentals of image formation, practical aspects of microscopy (koehler illumination, light sources, objective lenses), the visual characteristics of your eyes, CCD cameras and image processing/display.
